Balthazar

Balthazar’s Journey: From Wild Mountain Pony to Gentle Companion

Back in 2009, Balthazar’s life took a dramatic turn. He was part of a herd of 100 ponies taken from the hills of Wales and sent to auction, destined for the meat trade.

But fate intervened — the meat buyer never turned up to collect them. What followed was a huge rescue mission, with rescue centres from across the country coming together to save these ponies and offer them safe, loving homes.

We were able to take in four stallions. Over time, three were successfully rehabilitated and rehomed. Balthazar, however, had a much tougher journey ahead of him.

A Name That Suits Him Well

Balthazar was named after one of the Three Wise Men — a fitting choice, as he seemed incredibly clever when it came to avoiding humans!

Having spent his whole life roaming free on the mountains, he was completely feral. Being captured and processed for auction was deeply traumatic for him. The process involved inserting a tag into his ear, which, for a horse, is incredibly distressing because their ears are highly sensitive.

This experience left Balthazar traumatised, with a strong dislike and fear of humans. Despite being sent away for one-on-one training, he simply wasn’t ready to bond with people.

A Permanent Safe Haven

Balthazar also suffered from foot problems, which require ongoing, careful management. With his health concerns and emotional scars, we decided it was best for him to stay with us permanently, where he could heal and live life on his own terms.

For many years, Balthazar lived quietly on the forest, decompressing and slowly learning about humans from a safe distance. Over the last five years, he has taken on a special role — providing calm, quiet companionship to new arrivals or some of Sarah’s own horses.

His aloof and gentle nature makes him the perfect friend for newcomers, as he isn’t overbearing or “in their faces.”

A Remarkable Breakthrough

The journey to heal Balthazar’s trust has been long and slow, but this year brought a truly special moment.

For the first time ever, Balthazar allowed Sarah to walk up and catch him in the field, without needing to guide him into a smaller area. Even more heartwarming, just last month he bravely allowed two of our volunteers to stroke him — something that once seemed impossible.

These small but incredible milestones remind us just how far he has come and how resilient he truly is.

A Testament to Patience and Love

Horses are among the most sensitive animals on earth. Like elephants, they never forget the pain they’ve experienced.

But with time, patience, and compassion, they can learn to trust again.

Balthazar’s story is a beautiful reminder that no matter how broken a soul may seem, healing is always possible with kindness and understanding.
