Milly

Milly’s Amazing Journey

When Milly first arrived at the rescue with her lifelong companion, Oreo, it was immediately clear why members of the public had been so concerned about her welfare.

Milly was in a very poor state. She had lost a significant amount of weight, seemed uncomfortable all the time, and was clearly struggling to move. Her front left hoof was badly deformed, and her front right leg showed extreme muscle wastage – she wouldn’t even try to put weight on it.

We called our trusted farm vets straight away. They examined Milly and suspected something serious was going on, but without access to x-ray equipment, they couldn’t be sure. They provided high-quality pain relief and recommended we get further investigations done.

Determined to get answers for Milly, we reached out to the wonderful Beth from Robinson Equine and Dental Vets, who kindly came out the very next day to help.

The x-rays revealed the heartbreaking truth:

  • At some point, Milly had suffered a traumatic injury to her front right leg, which had led to chronic arthritis, eventually causing the elbow joint to fuse.
  • This left her right leg with very limited movement and functionality.
  • Since goats carry 60–70% of their body weight on their front legs, the left leg had been forced to compensate. Sadly, this extra strain caused catastrophic damage to her left foot, as shown clearly in the x-rays.

Even the vets were amazed that Milly was still standing, let alone moving around.

Initially, we prepared ourselves for the heartbreaking decision to give Milly a short time filled with love, comfort, and pain relief before saying goodbye – ensuring she left this world on a good note.

But Milly had other plans.

To our surprise and absolute joy, Milly began to thrive. With careful management and ongoing pain relief, she started to play with the other goats, running and jumping on and off toys, gaining weight, and her coat turned glossy and healthy again!

Seeing her transformation, we knew we couldn’t let her go. Milly will now stay with us as a permanent resident, alongside her beloved Oreo. With close monitoring from our team and regular vet check-ups, Milly will be given every chance to enjoy her life. When the time comes, she will let us know when she’s had enough, but until then, we will be by her side every step of the way – celebrating her strength and resilience.
