🧠 About Ruby
Belgian Hares are often described as “the poor man’s racehorse”—and Ruby fits that description perfectly.
She is:
- Highly intelligent and inquisitive
- Extremely active and athletic
- Sensitive and easily startled
- Independent and strong-willed
Because of this, Ruby is not suitable for children or first-time rabbit owners. She needs someone who understands rabbit behaviour and can provide the calm, structured environment she thrives in.
🏡 Home Requirements
Ruby has made her preferences clear:
- ✔️ Experienced rabbit owner essential
- ✔️ Quiet, calm household
- ✔️ Large, secure outdoor setup with plenty of space
- ✔️ Can live alone, but benefits from seeing other rabbits nearby
- ❌ Not suitable for bonding with another rabbit
She enjoys having other rabbits in view but does not want to share her space directly.
💸 Ongoing Costs (Monthly Estimate)
- 🥬 Food (hay, fresh veg, pellets): £50
- 🧻 Bedding (dust-extracted): £30
- 💉 Vaccinations (annual £86): ~£7.16/month
- 🏥 Vet savings fund: £20
Total estimated monthly cost: £107.16
⚠️ Most insurance companies will not cover rabbits over 5 years old, so setting aside a monthly vet fund is strongly recommended. While rabbits are generally healthy, veterinary costs can rise quickly if they become unwell.
🏠 Setup Costs
A suitable enclosure for a rabbit like Ruby is a significant investment:
- Large, high-quality outdoor housing: £600+
There are many excellent “rabbit palace” style enclosures available that provide the space and enrichment she needs.
🩺 Health Status
Ruby is:
- ✅ Fully vaccinated
- ✅ Spayed
- ✅ Up to date with worming and flea treatments
- ✅ 5 years of age.
